Here’s a mix I made for my girl friends for this Valentine’s Day. It’s a bunch of the best stupid girly songs from the 1990s. There are sappy sad songs (remember Expose?) and sexy, soulful ones, but they definitely brought back sweet memories of couples’ skate at the roller rink, getting ready for school dances and sitting in the waiting room at Dr. Virgulti’s office while I waited to get my orthodontia adjusted.
If you told 14-year old Jess that when she was 27, she’d be making this mix for her friends, she wouldn’t believe you. But of course, 14-year old Jess was absolutely positive she’d be dating Lenny Kravitz and living in a penthouse apartment with sweet black leather couches and a 100-CD changer by now, too. Listening back to these songs makes me remember a time when I was just beginning to conceptualize the idea of like - let alone love - and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy in a sweet and awkward way.
